Manufacturer vs. Dealer: Why It Changes Everything

Most people shopping for a steel building assume they’re buying from the company that makes it. Often, they’re not.

A large share of the companies selling steel buildings are dealers or brokers. They take your order, mark it up, and hand it to a fabricator you’ll never speak to. That’s a legitimate business, but it changes your price, your timeline, and, most importantly, who’s accountable when something needs fixing. So it’s worth knowing which one you’re dealing with.

What a dealer adds and what it costs you

A middleman adds a layer between you and the building. That layer usually means:

• A markup. You’re paying the fabricator’s price plus the dealer’s margin.
• A game of telephone. Your questions, changes, and problems pass through someone who didn’t make the building and can’t change it; they can only relay it.
• Split accountability. When there’s an issue, the dealer points at the plant and the plant points at the dealer. Nobody owns it.

None of that makes a dealer dishonest. It just means you’re one step removed from the thing you’re buying.

What buying direct changes

When you buy from the manufacturer, the team that designs your building is the same team that engineers it, fabricates it, and stands behind it:

• No markup layer — you’re paying the people who make it.
• Straight line for questions and changes — the person you call can actually answer, because they built it.
• One point of accountability — when the same company draws it, makes it, and ships it, there’s nobody to point at.

How to tell which one you’re talking to

You don’t have to take anyone’s word for it. Ask:

1. “Where is my building fabricated?” A manufacturer gives you a city and a plant. A dealer gets vague.
2. “Can I visit the facility?” A real manufacturer says yes.
3. “Who do I talk to if there’s a problem in week six?” If the answer is “your salesperson,” you may be a step removed from whoever can actually fix it.
4. “Do you hold IAS AC472 accreditation?” That’s a manufacturer’s audit standard dealers don’t have because they don’t fabricate. Link: IAS AC472

If the answers get fuzzy, you’re likely talking to a middleman. Price the markup into your comparison and decide with your eyes open.
